Although the MSX was virtually unknown in North America, it had a large following in Europe and Asia. In fact, much of its software base was written by industry giants Namco and Konami--if you are a fan of their earlier games, such as Konami's Gradius or Goonies, or Namco's Dig-Dug, Pac-Man or Galaga, the MSX will be quite a nice find.

freeM is an emulator project combining much of fMSX and Murakami Reki's fMSX98. It supports MSX2, PSG and SCC sound, Mega-ROMs, Kanji, and fMSX disk images. This project is off to a fantastic start.
Make sure you download the ROM images--if you don't place these in the same folder as freeM, the emulator will not be able to start.

Zodiac is an open-source MSX emulator for classic Mac OS and Mac OS X. It's based on a UNIX program that uses SDL, so there is not much in the way of a Mac OS GUI, but the emulator does appear to work properly. Unfortunately, most of the documentation is written in Japanese.
